Seasonal Fruit - September

A combination of hydroponics, accessing fruit from all over Australia (climates) and modern storing technology means that most fruit and vegetables can be accessed all year round. However the best locally produced fruit at the moment is:

Fruits: apple - lady williams, cumquat, grapefruit, lemon, mandarins -ellendale - murcot, oranges - blood - seville, papaya, pawpaw, pineapple - smooth leaf, tangelo

Vegetables: artichoke, asian greens - bok choy - choy sum - gai laan - wonga bok, asparagus - green - purple, avocados - fuerte - hass - sharwill, beans - broad - green, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower garlic, ginger, leek, lettuce, mushrooms - morel, onions - salad - spring, peas, potato, pumpkin, silverbeet, spinach.

Keeping fruit fresh at home!

Pears: Pears can take 3-7 days to fully ripen at room temperature. Store at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. Ripening from the inside out, pears are ready to eat when soft at the stem end.
Once ripe, store pears in the fridge.

Avocados: Avocados can take 2-5 days to fully ripen at room temperature. To speed up ripening, place fruit in a brown paper bag with a banana. An avocado is ripe and ready to eat when it yields to gentle pressure at the stem end.

Bananas: Bananas ripen rapidly in warm weather. Bananas are ready to eat when their skin loses its green colouring - black markings may develop on the skin as the fruit ripens. Buy bananas when they are at different stages of ripeness so fruit does not all ripen at once.

Custard Apples: Purchased firm, custard apples take 3-5 days to soften when left at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Once ripe, eat custard apples as soon as possible.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes can take up to 7 days to fully ripen. Leave at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Do not store in the fridge until very ripe. For maximum flavour, remove from the fridge and bring to room temperature to serve.
